About Erin Dressel MD, FACOG, MPH

What Makes Colorado home to you?

I grew up in New Orleans, LA and Houston, TX and moved to Colorado for residency in 2016 with the desire for mountain adventures and beautiful scenery. I met my husband in Colorado and we cannot imagine living and working in a better place. Coming from a background of creole cooking and southern humidity, I learned to embrace the beauty of Colorado and cannot imagine living and working in a better place.

What are your passions outside work?

I enjoy cycling, skiing, yoga, camping, hiking, cooking, reading, gardening, and traveling. I was an English major in college so have developed a life-long passion for reading, especially contemporary fiction. Growing up in New Orleans, I learned creole cooking from my mother and love hosting dinner parties to bring my culture to the Midwest.

Why did you become an OB/GYN?

I knew from a young age that I wanted to study medicine. I decided to go to a liberal arts college to take advantage of the diversity of knowledge provided in that environment. I majored in English literature and minored in French language and kept medicine in the background. I then volunteered in the women’s health department and was on a team that ran a theatrical production raising awareness about global violence against women. This was my first entry into the joys and struggles that women face across different ages, cultures, and ethnicities. I went on to volunteer in the Labor and Delivery unit at the local public hospital and found the environment so rewarding.

What in your career are you most proud about?

I received the Chief Resident Research Award for my project on early screening for gestational diabetes in pregnancy. I was able to improve screening rates in our underserved patient population. With my public health degree, I strive to increase access to women’s health services and improve the quality of care that is provided.

What is the most important part of your job?

My patients are the most important part of my job. I love listening to my patients, educating them, and providing care that meets their goals. My style is open communication and shared decision making. Often the conversations in my field are deeply personal and I strive to be approachable and comforting. I want my patients to feel that the care they receive from me comes from a place of compassion and trust.
