About Laura Sweeney, CNM
What makes Colorado home to you?
I have lived in Colorado for 24 years. I spent many vacations here as a kid exploring the mountains. I came back to Colorado because I missed the mountains and I stay here for the mountains and the wonderful weather.
What are your passions outside of work?
Running with her dog, and biking, hiking and skiing with her husband and three children in the mountains throughout Colorado and neighboring Utah.
Why did you become an OB/GYN?
I am passionate about caring for women and helping expectant mothers achieve their most optimal and satisfying birth experience.
What in your career are you most proud?
I had the privilege of starting a nurse midwifery practice in Tulsa, Ok in 1993. At the time I was the only CNM who had hospital privileges in Tulsa. It was an exciting time for me to introduce midwifery to the community and watch my practice grow. Today, Nurse-midwifery is thriving in that community and CNMs have privileges in multiple area hospitals there.
Over the course of my career I have taught nurse midwife and nurse practitioner students, as well as family practice residents. I feel that not only have I been able to teach them valuable skills, but that I also made a positive impact on their learning experience.
What is the most important part of your job?
I feel that one of the most important things I can do as a midwife is to educate women and their families so they are able to make informed decisions throughout pregnancy, childbirth and their reproductive lifespan. It is my goal that every woman I care for is fully informed and empowered to then achieve their health goals, as well as their most optimal childbirth experience.
