What Is a Laparoscopy?

A laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgery that allows a doctor to explore your abdominal and reproductive organs. Laparoscopic surgery gets its name from the tool doctors use to examine the abdomen. A laparoscope is a thin tube with a camera attached to the end. Laparoscopies are performed for several reasons, including searching for abnormalities, taking biopsies and gauging the effectiveness of other treatments.

Who Needs Laparoscopic Surgery?

At Mile High OB/GYN, we use laparoscopic surgery to diagnose and treat many reproductive-related concerns. Some of these conditions include:

  • Tumors, growths and other blockages.
  • Fibroids.
  • Endometriosis.
  • Pelvic prolapse.
  • Ectopic pregnancies.
  • Incontinence.

If you’re experiencing pain in your torso, your doctor may suggest laparoscopic exploration so they can better understand what’s going on. Laparoscopes are also useful for procedures such as hysterectomies and tubal ligation.

How Does the Procedure Work?

You’ll likely be placed under general anesthesia for the procedure. Depending on your circumstances, the doctor will make between one and four small incisions no larger than a few centimeters wide. Then, the doctor will inflate your abdomen using CO2 to get a better view of the area. They will insert the laparoscope and move the camera around to get images of the relevant organs.

At this point, they may also take a tissue sample, conduct a biopsy or perform another procedure. Once the doctor has the information they need, they will close your incisions and take you to recovery.

What Are the Benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery?

Minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopic surgery usually involve smaller incisions, shorter operations and faster recovery times than major surgeries. You may be back to your normal activity level within a week of the procedure. Any discomfort should subside within a few days.

Serious complications from laparoscopic surgery are rare, but if you have any concerns, keep in close contact with your doctor until you’ve healed.
