All About Midwifery Services
Midwifery care is a long-standing practice that has been around for centuries. Midwives work with women every day navigate everything from reproductive health to pregnancy, acting as a helping hand and trusted medical professional. While they have different qualifications than an OB/GYN or other medical doctor, they have special skills that make them a great option for women’s health care.
At Mile High, our program expands upon traditional ideals of midwifery care to provide you with innovative, holistic, and evidence-based care. We make a great effort to work one-on-one with our patients to offer family planning, labor and delivery, and general women’s health care services.

General Labor + Delivery Considerations
Childbirth is most likely one of the biggest moments of your life, especially if you are pregnant with your first child.
No woman’s birth experience will be the same. Because of this, it is important to understand that what you have heard from others about their delivery may not be the case for you. For example, it is common for women to deliver both vaginally and via c-section. Talking to your doctor about which option you would prefer is something you should do early in your pregnancy.
For many people, they know they are going into labor when their contractions are less than five minutes apart for several hours or their water breaks. If either of these happens, or you are experiencing anything that is out of character for your pregnancy, you should call your provider and go to the hospital. In many cases, active labor will last anywhere from 4-8 hours. However, some can last for longer. The four stages of labor are:
- Early Labor. Here, you will first notice contractions and will begin dilating. This stage lasts anywhere from 12-24 hours.
- Pushing and Birth. This is where you become fully dilated and will deliver your baby, lasting up to two hours.
- After Delivery. After you deliver your baby, you will push out the placenta. Usually, this only takes 30 minutes-1 hour.
- Returning to Normal. Finally, your uterus will return to normal and you will begin postnatal care.
Overall, the labor and delivery process can be a beautiful thing. Our doctors, nurses, midwives, and other providers will support you from the beginning of the birthing process to the end.
How to Prepare for L+D
Before you go into labor, you can expect to have several check-ins with your doctor to monitor any complications you are having and to ensure that everything in your body is prepared for delivery. Here, you should communicate with your doctor about what your expectations are for your delivery, any questions you have, or any problems you are experiencing. The mile High providers are here to help you to create a stress-free delivery process, as much as possible.
As you get prepared for your delivery, it’s important to make sure you have everything you need. Collect any important documents and health information, including your birth plan, and put them in a safe, accessible place that you can get to quickly in case of an emergency. Make sure you have transportation lined up to take you to the hospital (or other birthing location) when you start having contractions. Knowing what to pack is important, too. Here are some tips:
- Don’t forget basic personal items like a hairbrush, lip balm, a toothbrush, and toothpaste.
- Pack a bathrobe or nightgown that is easily accessible for breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact, and any check-ups a doctor will provide.
- Comfortable outfits can come in handy if you want to change out of your hospital gown at any point.

Do you still have questions about labor and delivery?
If you are less than 34 weeks pregnant and are having several contractions around every two hours, you should see a doctor immediately.
We recommend relaxing as much as possible in the few weeks prior to your delivery. If you are traveling by air, it is best to not do this after you are 36 weeks.
Shortly after you find out you are pregnant, you should start making plans for what you want your delivery to look like. Communicate these plans with anyone that will be with you at your delivery and your provider.
Everyone’s delivery time is different. Some women are able to deliver their baby in a matter of a few hours, but others may take longer. It also depends on the level of risk your pregnancy has, the position of the baby, and other factors.
After you give birth, you need to allow yourself 6-8 weeks to fully heal. However, if you have a c-section delivery or experience any complications, it may take longer.
