How to Prepare for L+D

Before you go into labor, you can expect to have several check-ins with your doctor to monitor any complications you are having and to ensure that everything in your body is prepared for delivery. Here, you should communicate with your doctor about what your expectations are for your delivery, any questions you have, or any problems you are experiencing. The mile High providers are here to help you to create a stress-free delivery process, as much as possible.

As you get prepared for your delivery, it’s important to make sure you have everything you need. Collect any important documents and health information, including your birth plan, and put them in a safe, accessible place that you can get to quickly in case of an emergency. Make sure you have transportation lined up to take you to the hospital (or other birthing location) when you start having contractions. Knowing what to pack is important, too. Here are some tips:

  • Don’t forget basic personal items like a hairbrush, lip balm, a toothbrush, and toothpaste.
  • Pack a bathrobe or nightgown that is easily accessible for breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact, and any check-ups a doctor will provide.
  • Comfortable outfits can come in handy if you want to change out of your hospital gown at any point.

You Can Meet Our Specialists

Do you still have questions about labor and delivery?

How do I know if I am going into preterm labor?

If you are less than 34 weeks pregnant and are having several contractions around every two hours, you should see a doctor immediately.

Can I travel before I give birth?

We recommend relaxing as much as possible in the few weeks prior to your delivery. If you are traveling by air, it is best to not do this after you are 36 weeks.

How soon should I make my birth plan?

Shortly after you find out you are pregnant, you should start making plans for what you want your delivery to look like. Communicate these plans with anyone that will be with you at your delivery and your provider.

How long will my delivery last?

Everyone’s delivery time is different. Some women are able to deliver their baby in a matter of a few hours, but others may take longer. It also depends on the level of risk your pregnancy has, the position of the baby, and other factors.

When will I recover from giving birth?

After you give birth, you need to allow yourself 6-8 weeks to fully heal. However, if you have a c-section delivery or experience any complications, it may take longer.
