Sexual Dysfunction

Sexual Dysfunction

Satisfactory sex is often much more complex than most people imagine. It involves the body and mind. Health, emotions, past experiences, and current relationships can affect sexual desire and arousal. Trouble in any of these areas can lead to sexual dysfunction, which is defined as a condition where an individual or couple experiences difficulties in any part of sexual activity, including oral sex and anal or vaginal sexual intercourse.

Mile High OB/GYN doctors are experienced in treating sexual dysfunction and disorders, especially in female bodies. If your sex drive or performance is worrying you or affecting your relationship, make an appointment today so you can get back to enjoying healthy sex life.

Types of Sexual Dysfunction and Disorders

Many women experience some type of sexual dysfunction at some point in their life. This umbrella term can refer to:

  • Low sex drive.
  • Sexual arousal disorders.
  • Sexual pain disorders.
  • Orgasmic disorders.

The causes of these disorders can be physical or mental. Physical causes can include medical conditions such as heart or thyroid disease, nerve conditions or fatigue. Certain physical changes, like pregnancy, childbirth and menopause, can cause hormone imbalances that lead to a lack of libido. Mental conditions such as stress, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and past sexual trauma might also prevent you from enjoying sex the way you want to.

Certain medications can also lead to sexual problems. Antidepressants, high blood pressure medication, antipsychotics, steroids and some epilepsy and cancer drugs can sometimes lower sex drive or cause vaginal discomfort.

Treating Sexual Dysfunction

When you meet with your doctor to discuss sexual dysfunction, they will likely ask if any of the above factors apply to you. They might run tests and ask about your medical history, beliefs and lifestyle. Once they get an idea of what may be causing the dysfunction, they can treat it.

Based on your goals, your treatment may include:

  • Medications to treat pain or increase libido.
  • Lubrication for vaginal dryness.
  • Therapy to reduce stress or discuss other concerns.
  • Techniques for you and your partner to increase intimacy.
